Lee County Family Gathering Shooting: Suspect Faces Additional Charges After Gunfire

A family reunion in Lee County, Georgia, became the scene of a shooting in June after an alleged confrontation escalated into gunfire outside a home on Autumn Leaf Drive.

Deputies were dispatched to the area after approximately 9 p.m. on June 7, 2026, following multiple reports of shots being fired. The Lee County Sheriff’s Office said the incident stemmed from a verbal altercation.

What Happened During the Family Gathering?

The family had reportedly gathered at the residence for a reunion when a vehicle drove past the property.

Witnesses told WALB that a man identified by authorities as Jeffrey Tyler Kinzer allegedly shouted racial slurs toward the group before leaving the area.

According to the family’s account, Kinzer returned a short time later wearing body armor and carrying an AR-15-style rifle. Witnesses said people at the gathering began running after seeing the firearm, followed by an exchange of gunfire.

The allegations regarding racial targeting were made by family members and witnesses; authorities described the initial dispute as a verbal altercation.

One Person Injured

Authorities said Kinzer was shot during the exchange and transported to a hospital for treatment.

After being medically cleared, he was taken to the Lee County Jail and initially charged with aggravated assault. Officials indicated that additional charges were expected as investigators continued examining the evidence.

No members of the family at the gathering were reported by investigators to have been struck by the gunfire, although vehicles were reportedly damaged.

Case Expands in Court

The legal case continued after the initial arrest.

During a July court appearance, the district attorney proposed dozens of additional charges, including aggravated assault counts and firearm-related charges. The judge also imposed a condition requiring Kinzer to remain at least half a mile away from the family’s home.

By August, WALB reported that a grand jury had issued an 89-count indictment connected to the alleged shooting.

Investigation Continues

The Lee County Sheriff’s Office remains the lead agency, with assistance from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

The case has attracted significant attention because of the allegations made by family members and the presence of children and older adults during the gathering.

As court proceedings continue, the final legal outcome will depend on the evidence presented and decisions made through the judicial process. The allegations against the defendant should therefore be distinguished from facts ultimately established in court.
