Rohit Rohit Death: Man Who Killed Woman After Stalking Her Dies in Highway 50 Standoff

A 22-year-old man who allegedly stalked and harassed a 38-year-old woman for months before fatally shooting her outside a Sacramento-area Panera Bread restaurant died after a standoff with deputies on Highway 50, authorities said.

The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office identified the man as Rohit Rohit following the deadly September 8, 2026, shooting and subsequent freeway standoff.

The woman has not yet been publicly identified.

Woman Killed Outside Sacramento Panera

Deputies were called shortly before 3 p.m. Tuesday to a shopping center near Panera Bread on Howe Avenue in the Arden-Arcade area after reports of a shooting.

Investigators said Rohit had been waiting at the shopping center when the woman arrived.

According to the sheriff’s office, he approached her and she attempted to get away. Rohit allegedly chased her and shot her multiple times before firing another shot at close range.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

Sheriff Says Rohit Had Stalked Woman for Months

Investigators say the relationship between Rohit and the woman involved a lengthy pattern of alleged stalking and harassment.

The sheriff’s office said the woman discovered an Apple AirTag hidden beneath the hood of her vehicle in January, prompting concerns about being tracked.

Authorities also described other alleged incidents, including Rohit deflating one of the woman’s tires and following her to work before offering to help her.

Investigators further said Rohit obtained a copy of her apartment key and entered her home while she was sleeping.

The woman later learned about the alleged entry and Rohit reportedly told her that he had entered because he was concerned something had happened to her.

Restraining Order Was Obtained

According to the sheriff’s office, deputies remained in contact with the woman as the alleged harassment continued.

In May, deputies encouraged her to seek a restraining order, which she subsequently obtained.

Authorities said Rohit allegedly violated the order in July by leaving grocery items at the woman’s home.

Despite those previous reports, investigators said the situation escalated dramatically on September 8 when the woman encountered Rohit at the shopping center.

Highway 50 Standoff Ends With Rohit’s Death

After the shooting, witnesses provided deputies with information about the suspect’s vehicle.

Investigators entered the vehicle information into a license-plate reader system, allowing deputies to locate it near Highway 50 and Watt Avenue within minutes.

Rohit stopped the vehicle on the freeway and refused commands to leave.

A law-enforcement standoff then developed on Highway 50 as deputies surrounded the vehicle.

Authorities ultimately found Rohit dead inside the vehicle from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The investigation caused a major Highway 50 closure, with portions of the freeway shut down for several hours while deputies investigated the shooting and standoff.

Investigation Continues

The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office said detectives are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting.

The identity of the 38-year-old woman had not been released in the latest reports.

Authorities are also continuing to examine the history between Rohit and the woman, including the alleged stalking, harassment and restraining-order violation that preceded the shooting.

The case highlights the potential danger associated with escalating stalking and domestic harassment situations, particularly when previous protective measures are allegedly violated.
